Business fined £500,000 after cyber-attack

Credit rating agency Equifax had a data breach exposing the personal data of around 146 million people, 15 million of which said to be from Britain.

This cyber-attack looks set to be very costly for Equifax who are set to be fined £500,000 by the Information Commissioner’s Office, after they have failed in protecting the personal data they hold.

Their systems were compromised as they failed to take the appropriate steps to protect their business and data, Cyber Security is a very, very real threat to every business, and it needs to be taken very seriously.

Chris Gough, Technical Director Mintivo
“Although this is a very serious fine for a very serious breach, the fine handed out was the maximum allowed by the ICO under the old Data Protection Act, should that have happened today under The GDPR, the fine could have (and probably would have) been in the millions.

The Equifax breach was made possible due to software not being updated after a vulnerability was discovered. Always update your devices, servers and websites as soon as security updates become available.”

Here at Mintivo, we can help make sure that your business is safe and protected from such data breaches, take a look at our infographic on 5 ways to stop your business getting hacked – take a look here.
